STEM Out! is for young women who are interested in future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  A day just for girls to hear stories from women in STEM careers, participate in hands-on activities, network with women peers and mentors, and have fun!  Explore your possibilities and meet other women who are interested in these fields.

 Anyone interested in another Programming Competition?
PLU Programming Competition (full details)
WHERE: PLU Morken Center for Learning and Technology (Directions, south of Tacoma)
WHEN: February 4th 2012, starts 9am.
COST: $15/student or $30/team (1-3 students), registration due Monday, 30th January
 
The contest brings together talented students from high schools throughout the state of Washington to compete in a spirit of fun. The contest will test their programming skills and problem solving ability.

The competition lasts three hours, during which time each team tries to solve several (usually six-ten) computer programming problems using any of a number of programming languages …

We were lucky to have Ben Slivka join us in Exploring Computer Science and AP Computer Science.  Mr. Slivka is a computer scientist who worked at Microsoft from 1985 to 1999 and was involved in several exciting projects there, including starting Internet Explorer.  Since, he has worked at Amazon, started and recently sold Dreambox Learning, and has worked with several non-profits.
Mr. Slivka shared his ideas on the current state of computing technology as well as some of what is to come.  I took some notes as students asked questions and …
