Web browser selection

You will work with a partner for this assignment.  The two of you will collaborate on a Word document including a comparison grid for the three most popular cross-platform browsers and a one page summary of which browser the two of you would recommend to someone just starting to use the web.  Make sure to put your names at the top! When you are done, you will be turning this document in to Ms. Martin’s shared drive.

Part 1: comparison

You will create a table comparing the most recent versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome.  You must cover the following comparison points:

  • Downloading it (Where do you get it from?  Is it easy to install?)
  • Speed (Does it take a long time to start?  To load pages?  Does it slow down when lots of pages are open?)
  • Resource usage (How much CPU do they use?  RAM?)
  • Compatibility (Can it display most websites?  What kinds of websites will it have trouble with?)
  • Security (Are there known security risks from using this browser?  Viruses?  Spyware?)
  • Privacy (Can you keep things from going into your history?  How are passwords saved?)
  • Looks (This is subjective.  Does it look modern?  Cluttered?  Complicated?)
  • Bookmarks (How are they stored and accessed?)
  • Search (How is it accessed?  Is it easy to change your search provider?)
  • Extensions (What kinds of plugins are available?)

Part 2: analysis

You will write about one page making a browser recommendation to someone who is not very familiar with the web.  Discuss the information in the table with your partner and be sure to base your arguments on factual evidence rather than pure opinion.

Turning it in

When you are done, you will turn in your document to Ms. Martin’s shared drive.  You will need to go to My Computer, then select Student Data (usually drive S), then select hmmartin, Writeable, and finally Browsers.  Copy your file into this folder.  If you are unsure how to do this, make sure you ask someone sitting near you or Ms. Martin!
