Jim George on Programming for Art.

14 October 2009 No Comment

Though Jim has just come back from a trip to China as is moving to New York in a couple of days, he still came in to talk to us about programming as art! You can find out more about Jim and his work on his website.

Jim told us that he was drawn to computer-based art in high school for two reasons: he had always wanted to draw but never knew how and had always loved producing skateboarding videos with digital cameras.  He started experimenting on his own and has created a range of neat projects.

The first project Jim showed us is called Boids.  Jim used it as a metaphor for programming — one small piece of code may not have very exciting behavior in isolation but add more and the whole becomes much more interesting than its pieces.  Boids is based off of a flocking algorithm and programmed in the Processing environment.

Other projects Jim talked about include SNIFF, an interactive dog projection, and ColorCipher, an iPhone application.  He emphasized the fact that the creative computing community is very open and welcoming and encouraged you to get involved!

If you think of any questions or comments for Jim, I’d love to pass them along.
